Why does the business need of strategic planning?

The Business Need of Strategic Planning; Management of an organization may be defined as achieving shared purposes through the efforts of different individuals, and so strategic management is involved with the structure of a medium- to long-term strategy by top management within an organization.

Corporate strategy is that which is essayed on behalf of a business, as objected to that of an individual; although we all adopt strategies on our behalf as we pursue what Blackadder's associate Baldrick would refer to as "a cunning plan".

To achieve corporate purposes, a strategic plan has to be set. This identifies each major feature so that provision can be made for it within the overall project. Without this planning, those who are responsible for the actions which must be carried out to achieve the objectives, i.e. the operational or tactical managers, are unable to select the essential tactics.

Provided there is a strategic plan set up by top management there is no requirement for tactical managers to be fully apprised of its detail; all they have to do is develop trust in senior managers so that they follow their teachings.

Managers at all levels in an organization have some accountability for involvement beyond the assignment they presently have in hand. The more senior the manager, the broader this commitment is and the further forward in time it grows.

Thus, for example, a senior manager in a large business such as BT is planning for 20 years forward in telecommunications, whereas a first-line supervisor is planning the best way to replace or repair a customer's phone line.
